Job Vacancy: Campaigns Co-ordinator
Bristol City of Sanctuary are on the search for a passionate individual to join our team as a Campaign Co-ordinator. The role’s purpose is to address structural barriers faced by people seeking asylum that access the projects across our partner organisations, including accessing free bus travel for people seeking asylum. The person fulfilling this role will work with those with lived experience of the asylum system to develop community knowledge, skills and confidence to effect change. They will do this through a community organising approach that empowers people to influence the decisions that affect their lives. They will also recruit, train and guide a group of campaigners with lived experience to engage local decision makers, raise awareness and speak truth to power.
Specific Duties
Engage and support people with lived experience
- Recruit and train people with lived experience to be active participants.
- Attend drop-in sessions at partner organisations’ Welcome Centres to get to know service users and build trusting relationships.
- Facilitate meetings for participants and identify training needs.
- Secure opportunities for skills and knowledge development through internal and external training including that provided by Citizens UK.
- Work with service users to gather rigorous, qualitative and quantitative data.
- Organise activities that bring together the campaigners with key stakeholders.
Lead effective campaigns
- Build local connections with local and national policy makers including cross party Councillors and local MPs.
- Facilitate opportunities for those with lived experience to speak and to create the space for new narratives and building of alliances to address issues of concern.
Project management
- Be an effective liaison between the participants, the Director and the partners of the project.
- Attend and report to joint meetings of the participating organisations
- Complete a mapping exercise of allies for the campaign, including voluntary sector organisations, community groups, places of worship schools etc
- Ensure Bristol City of Sanctuary website and social media pages are kept updated with relevant campaign communications.
General
- Participate in and prepare for regular supervision and Appraisal with the Director
- Attend such meetings as appropriate
- Adhere to the policies of Bristol City of Sanctuary and to respect and understand the policies of the other organisations within the partnership including safeguarding, Confidentiality and Data Protection
- Undertake other additional duties as may become necessary
- Assist with the monitoring of the campaigns and update on progress
Essential Criteria
- Experience in participating or leading campaigns and implementing change (this can be in a personal or professional setting)
- Experience of the asylum system in the UK/
- A genuine interest in addressing the structural barriers to integration for newcomers to Bristol.
- Experience of working with and supporting volunteers.
- Understanding of local and regional government structures.
- Ability to prioritise tasks, to identify and work to deadlines and to manage own time effectively under own initiative.
- Excellent written and verbal skills, including presentation skills and an emphasis on negotiation and representation.
- An ability to produce reports of work completed and collect and present data for different audiences.
- Excellent IT skills.
- An ability to be flexible and work well within a Team.
- Experience of building connections and maintaining alliances.
- Good knowledge and commitment to anti racist practice and equal opportunities with an ability awareness of diversity issues in all areas of work.

Volunteer Opportunities in Bristol

Borderlands
Borderlands is a charity that works with people who are asylum seekers and refugees. Through various projects, they support their members to improve their lives and the community in which they live. Their work at Borderlands would not be possible without the contribution of their large team of skilled volunteers.
Borderlands are looking for mentors!
Borderlands are looking for volunteer mentors for our new round of training which we will run in September. The training will take place over four Wednesday evening. Our mentors are fantastic volunteers who offer emotional and practical support to refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol. If you are interested, please fill out this application form.
Bristol Signing Support
Bristol Reporting Solidarity are welcoming new volunteers on to their Wednesday morning sessions! They attend Patchway Police station every Wednesday morning to offer a friendly face and a chat to asylum seekers having to report to the Home Office as part of their bail conditions. They also offer signposting to services provided by others, for example foodbanks, and destitution support.
There are 2 shifts on Wednesdays, 9.30-11.30 and 11.30-14.00 . Two volunteers are required for each shift.
