Policy and Campaigns

We support important campaigns that will help to create a safer, more welcoming experience for people seeking sanctuary in Bristol and across the UK.

Here in the UK, people seeking refugee status are banned from working whilst they wait months, and often years, for a decision on their asylum claim.

Instead, they are left to live on just ยฃ7 per day.

We believe that people who have risked everything to find safety should have the best chance of contributing to our society and integrating into our communities. This means giving people seeking asylum the right to work.

Together, we believe we can #LiftTheBan and ensure that people seeking safety in the UK have the right to work. Click here to find out more and get involved.

BRASP (Bristol Refugee and Asylum Seeker Partnership) is a partnership between sixteen local organisations supporting people seeking sanctuary in the city.

In 2021, we worked with BRASP to challenge to the Nationality and Boarders Bill and its devastating impact on the rights of those seeking sanctuary. Read more about our work here.

Support asylum seekers in our campaign for free bus travel across the West of England!

A day pass for the bus at ยฃ6.50 can cost an asylum seeker living in a hotel over half of their weekly allowance, which is a meager ยฃ9.95. This means living on over just ยฃ1 a day.

This forces them to make impossible choices between essential journeys, like taking a child to school, attending local and medical appointments, phone credit to call family, and other basic living costs.

Oxfordshire County Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority in Birmingham have recently undertaken a pilot to provide free bus travel for asylum seekers. Will you join us in asking the West of England Combined Authority to help do the same?
